Fire accidents are one of the most dangerous and devastating accidents that can happen to anyone. Properties can get lost, houses can be burned, and even a loved one can be injured, or worse, can die. Therefore, it is of most importance that everyone has some knowledge when it comes to preventing accidental fire from happening. One of the most things that one can do to prevent fires is to have the necessary equipment. One of these is the water fire extinguisher.
A water fire extinguisher, as the name obviously suggests, contains water to put out Class A fires. Class A fires are caused by products or materials that are ordinarily flammable, such as paper, clothing, straw, and rubber among others. It is very interesting – and helpful as well – to know that smoking cigarettes is one of the leading causes of fire today. Usually, these fires can be easily contained. One of the best ways to put these fires out is by spraying or pouring them with water. Water removes the heat from the fire and can extinguish them easily. Unlike a carbon dioxide extinguisher, a water fire extinguisher can put out Class A fires effectively because the water can seep through thick materials such as quilts, beddings, and cushions.
There are two types of water fire extinguisher you can choose from to put inside your home for preventive measures. The first type is the air-pressured extinguisher, When the spray nozzle is pressed, the air pressure makes the water spurt out in a constant flow. The air pressure also makes the water stream out in a long distance, making the person using the extinguisher relatively safe from the fire. This extinguisher is ideal for a fire that is getting bigger and less uncontrollable, as it sprays out the water in a fairly large amount, putting out the fire easier.
The second type you can consider is the water mist spray. Along with water, pressured nitrogen is mixed in. When the water is released, the nitrogen combined with it makes the water come out in a mist or in little droplets, as compared to a steady stream of water in an air-pressured extinguisher. Typically, water mist spray extinguishers are used for small places and small fires. They are much less messy than the first type because water comes out in small quantities, saving the water in case there are other accidents to follow.
One thing that you must remember about fire extinguishers in general is that they have to be put in a place where everybody can see and reach for it. The National Fire Protection Association (www.nfpa.org) recommends a home fire extinguisher for each floor. It is recommended to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, garage and one on every floor. This includes the basement main living floors, floors with bedrooms and in a walk in attic.
Regular testing to see if the spray nozzle is still in a good working condition should be done. Specifically, another important thing anyone should remember about water fire extinguisher it is ideal for Class A fires only. Fires that are caused by electricity, gases, or grease, will only get worse when put out by fire. So make it safe for everyone in the household by putting the correct label on your fire extinguisher.
